Additional Information: As a result of feedback received from the community and council, we have been encouraged to make some changes to the proposal: our plans now include a completely new and larger community theatre building on Havil Street, with student homes above.

Alumno Developments is making proposals to invest in the old Town Hall. They are working with Theatre Peckham on a local project that will provide student accommodation, community facilities and bring new benefits to Camberwell.

Alumno would like to hear your views before submitting a planning application to Southwark Council. This website provides more information and contact details to provide feedback.

What’s proposed?

Alumno’s most recently completed project was the refurbishment of the neighbouring buildings to the Town Hall at 32-39 Peckham Road. In partnership with Camberwell College of Arts (part of the University of Arts London) they successfully refurbished four Georgian buildings and built a new build extension to provide student accommodation.

This new project has been developed in consultation with the community and Southwark Borough Council.  Alumno was encouraged to make some changes to the original proposal which increase the community benefits.  The plans now include a completely new and larger community theatre building on Havil Street with student homes above.  In summary they include:

  • New rehearsal space and facilities for Theatre Peckham
  • 149 student accommodation rooms, with 162 beds, and communal spaces adjacent to Camberwell College of Arts
  • A new café and art gallery run by Hotel Elephant
  • Studio and workspace for students and arts businesses run by SPACE
  • New buildings and investment in the community
  • Growing the higher education hub on Peckham Road

How? – Local Planning

When bringing together proposals Alumno has taken time to consider the planning policies which Southwark Council, national government and the Mayor of London set out to make sure developments are suitable for their local area.

Southwark Town Hall is an historic municipal building. It has played an important role in Camberwell and wider South London for many years. Because of this, Alumno is working closely with Southwark Council and carefully considering these planning policies while also bringing together a plan which will bring a new life to the building.

Considerations we are making

The main considerations when proposing these plans include:

  • The Mayor’s London Plan recognises the important role of higher education in the economy, and encourages the provision of purpose built student accommodation.
  • The Town Hall building is important locally, and Alumno is making sympathetic refurbishment proposals.
  • The building is an important part of the Sceaux Gardens Conservation area. Alumno is proposing a high quality design of the rear extension and Theatre Peckham improvements.
  • Council officers are keen to enhance the historic nature of the site and see the Town Hall to be put to good use. They recognise the contribution the project will make to developing a higher education hub on Peckham Road, around the Camberwell College of Arts’ campus.
  • Providing new and improved facilities for Theatre Peckham: improved access, two new studios, a box office, offices, new visitor facilities, entrance foyer and refurbished Theatre.
  • Opening new studio and workspace for local artists and designers on the ground and lower ground floors of the town hall – creating local jobs and investment opportunities.
